UN rights watchdog slams India over castes and racism

The UN's anti-racism watchdog on Friday expressed concern about "deeply entrenched" caste discrimination and racial prejudice in India, urging the government to halt segregation and to act against killings and rapes....

Despite the formal abolition of "untouchability" under the Indian constitution, "de facto segregation persists," the panel said after reviewing India's record in upholding international treaties against racism.
