China to free world: 'Stay away from the Dalai Lama'

advertisement

Okay, this crap has gone far enough already.

China on Thursday warned other countries against developing close ties with the Dalai Lama, one day after the exiled leader of Tibet cancelled a trip to Belgium.

"We hope relevant parties and countries can keep on high alert for attempts by the Dalai Lama to undermine their relations with China and keep alert to his words and actions to split the motherland," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said at a regular news conference.

Beijing has for years mounted an aggressive lobbying campaign against the Dalai Lama, seeking to deny international legitimacy to the Nobel Peace Prize winner and undermine his enduring popularity in Chinese-controlled Tibet.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Why does China even NEED Tibet?

1. The Han Chinese have a massive population, compared to the traditionally low one of Tibet. I think the Nazis called it "lebensraum" ("room to live in"). The always-comparatively small Tibetan population is now even smaller, with the current ratio in Lhasa city being 1 ethnic Tibetan to 3 Han Chinese.

2. Minerals, hydroelectricity, timber, and even oil reserves - in other words, vast natural resources. Many people don't realize that the Chinese plans to damn and divert the 4 major rivers that originate on the Tibetan plateau, and water much of south Asia, is going to result in a hydro-disaster for India, Nepal and environs.

3. Historical pride. ("Tibet has been an integral part of China since ancient times") - and Nepal, Bhutan and India's Arunachal Pradesh are probably next.

Agreed Gwenny. We can't capture the hearts of our people - well they're not ours yet - technically - but they will be some day - with some Nobel prize-winning pacifist running around placating them!
